Nice to meet you, I’m Kayla.

Nice to meet you, I’m Kayla Makinson. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC I). I earned my Master of Counseling degree from Oregon State University. I also have additional certification in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

My approach is client-centered, relational, and collaborative. I believe that building a therapeutic relationship, meeting clients where there at and building trust are essential to counseling. I enjoy seeing the change that occurs when an individual feels overwhelmed or stuck and makes the commitment to change in order to improve their quality of life. I find it fulfilling to walk alongside clients in their journey to help facilitate healing and growth.

My ideal client is someone who is willing to be open to suggestions, willing to step out of their comfort zone and see where change and growth can occur, create boundaries when needed and someone who is vulnerable enough to see change.

I enjoy working with client’s specifically in perinatal mental health, anxiety, past trauma history, and life transitions. I also have extensive experience working with individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Some fun things about me:

  • Movie(s) I love: The Notebook, Dumb and Dumber, Toy Story, Call of the Wild

  • Favorite food to eat out: Sushi, Thai food, tacos, pizza...I mean really anything!

  • Favorite food to cook: When I do, my go tos are black bean casserole, fajitas, or steak on the BBQ

  • Favorite thing to do in Bend: Anything outdoors - kayaking, camping with my family, hiking, trying new restaurants with my husband

  • Hobby(ies): I enjoy reading, crafts, archery shooting, and repurposing furniture

  • Dream destination: Anywhere where there is a beach. I would love to go to Turks and Caicos

  • Favorite quote or personal motto: Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance." - Brene Brown

  • Favorite weekend destination: Depending on the season; in the summer we love to camp, in the winter heading to the beach

  • Three words that describe me: Compassionate, humble, and a good sense of humor...laughter is the best medicine, right?

  • Number one bucket list item: Doing a trip across the US in a renovated camper van. I would also love to stay the night in fire lookouts all over Oregon.

  • On a day with no obligations, I will be: Again....depending on the day; in the winter I like to wake up late, drink coffee, and watch movies. And in the summer, having a slow morning and then enjoying the outdoors by going on a hike and then lunch after.
